Electrifying a delivery fleet

Finding quick wins and better charging strategies

Using Game Plan to analyse over 200 of their vehicles, accounting for vehicle modifications and payload weights, one customer with a large delivery fleet found that 78% of their daily driving could easily be done on a single charge. This showed a strategy based on AC charging with a smaller number of backup DC charging would meet their needs and reduce their impact on the local electricity grid.

Responding to extreme events with an EV fleet

Companies with assets spread over a wide geographic range typically rely on utes to transport people and equipment to & from these assets. But, in an emergency, like a violent storm, electricity might not be available for a few days.

One customer used Game Plan to analyse travel their fleet had done during past storms and modelled the performance of different EV options based on this travel. It quickly became clear that even if they had to rely completely on diesel generators to keep their vehicles charged, they would have needed less diesel to respond to the storm with a fleet of EVs than with a fleet of utes!

Testing scenarios to provide the right advice

A big part of EV fleet management is helping drivers adapt to driving EVs, especially if your fleet goes to remote locations or over rugged terrain. One of our customers supports a team that does both and wanted to make sure they were getting the right advice for every trip.

Using Optimiser, the fleet manager ran hundreds of his own simulations along specific routes, using different weight, vehicle configuration and speed settings to see the impact they would have on the vehicle’s battery use along the trip.

The end result was a guide that could be shared with staff that specified where the last possible charging stop was on each route, and the minimum charge a driver would need to complete the trip after they had left it. This gave the team simple, actionable insights for all of the organisation’s regular trips, and a tool that they could use to plan any trips that weren’t in the guide.

Supporting fleet sales with fast, tailored simulations

Variables that affect EV driving range, like weight and drag, are much more complex when it comes to heavy vehicles like trucks, especially when they do a lot of rural or highway driving.

Using Optimiser, a truck leasing company was able to test-drive electric trucks over specific routes, tweak their specifications in Optimiser and then simulate these vehicle’s performance over their customer’s regular routes. This will help their sales team direct customer enquiries to the right type of vehicle for the job, and provide guidance on how best to keep their vehicles charged along the way.

It can easily feel like your fleet is stuck with utes. They are large, four-wheel drive, multi-purpose vehicles that staff love because they can use them to tow boats on the weekend. Utes can also feel like status symbols if your organisation includes vehicles as part of a salary package.

This is exactly how one of our customers felt. But, after receiving an EV Roadmap Report that analysed their real-world travel, weekend use and trips to local wharves, they could see that 74% of their fleet of utes could be replaced with EVs.

A small pool fleet of shared utes could easily service their team’s utility and recreational requirements while the market worked on delivering better, affordable electric ute options.
